Almost everything about solar in New York City is different from the rest of the state, starting with the roofs. Rowhouses and attached homes across Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx have flat or very low slope roofs with parapet walls. Panels there are tilted on ballasted or mechanically attached racking rather than laid on a pitch, which is a different engineering problem and a different cost structure.
Staten Island is the exception and the reason it leads the city on solar adoption. It is overwhelmingly detached single family housing with pitched roofs, which is to say it behaves like suburban New York rather than like the rest of the city, while still paying Con Edison rates.
Permitting runs through the NYC Department of Buildings rather than a town building department, and it is its own process with its own timelines. Fire code access pathways are enforced strictly here, which means usable roof area is meaningfully smaller than total roof area. On a small rowhouse roof that can be the deciding factor.
Shading comes from neighbouring buildings rather than trees, and it changes through the day in ways a quick site visit can miss. Insist on a proper shading study.
The economics are strong because Con Edison rates are the highest in the state. New York City also has a property tax abatement for solar installations, which is specific to the city and worth asking an installer to confirm current terms on, since the programme has been extended and amended several times.
NYC enforces required clear pathways around and across a roof. On a small rowhouse this can cut usable area substantially, so ask for the usable figure rather than the total.
City permitting differs from town building departments across the state. Use an installer who files in the city regularly.
New York City offers a property tax abatement for solar in addition to state incentives. Terms have been amended repeatedly, so have your installer confirm the current rules and deadlines in writing rather than relying on anything you read online.

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners is the industry standard credential for solar installers. It certifies the individual professional who holds it, not the company, so a firm advertising it may have one certified person and twenty who are not.
How to check. Ask which named individual holds it, then search that name in the directory.
Search the NABCEP directoryRegistration in the state's NY-Sun programme. This one is not a nice to have: the New York State incentive is only available through an approved contractor, so using an unregistered installer forfeits it. Some also hold the Quality Solar Installer designation, which requires at least 12 NY-Sun projects in the past year and an average of 4 out of 5 on NYSERDA's own field inspections.
How to check. Search the company name in NYSERDA's list before you sign anything.
Check NYSERDA's contractor listAppropriate electrical licensing for the work, plus general liability and workers compensation cover. A contractor without workers compensation can leave you personally exposed if someone is injured on your roof.
How to check. Ask for certificates of insurance naming you, and check the licence with your town or county before work starts. Do not accept a policy number alone.
Interconnection is where most New York solar timelines slip, and it is handled very differently by Con Edison, National Grid, NYSEG, RG&E and PSEG Long Island. Permitting varies again by town.
How to check. Ask how many systems they have energised on your specific utility in the past year, and for two addresses in your county you can drive past.

Con Edison serves New York City. That means a single interconnection process and one rate structure across the region, which makes comparing quotes here more straightforward than in parts of New York served by several utilities.
New York City sees around 25 inches a season. It does not stop solar working. Panels produce less in winter because days are short rather than because it is cold, and they are slightly more efficient at low temperatures. Snow slides off tilted glass as it warms, usually within a day or two. Any credible annual production estimate already models winter losses for this climate. What snowfall does change is design: tilt and racking must be specified for local load.
