Best Solar Panels in 2026, and How to Judge Them
We are not going to publish a ranked list of brands. Almost every one you find is ordered by commission. Here is how to read a spec sheet instead.
The specifications that matter on a solar panel are efficiency, the temperature coefficient, the degradation rate, and the length and type of warranty. For most New York homes the differences between reputable tier-one panels are smaller than the difference a good installer makes.
Why we do not rank brands
Search "best solar panels" and you will find dozens of ranked lists. Almost all of them are affiliate pages, ordered by what pays. We earn referral fees too, which is exactly why we are not going to pretend a brand ranking is objective.
What is genuinely useful is knowing which numbers on a spec sheet change your outcome, so you can evaluate whatever a quote puts in front of you.
The four specifications that matter
Efficiency
How much of the light hitting the panel becomes electricity. Higher efficiency means more output per square metre, which matters when roof space is tight and matters less when it is not.
Temperature coefficient
How much output falls as the panel heats up. Less relevant in New York than in Arizona, but a better coefficient still helps on hot summer afternoons.
Degradation rate
How fast output declines per year. Lower is better. The difference between 0.25% and 0.55% a year compounds meaningfully over 25 years.
Warranty terms
Length matters, but so does what is guaranteed. Look for the retained output percentage at end of term, and check whether labour is covered or only the part.
What matters more than the panel
This is the uncomfortable part for equipment marketing. For most homes, the difference between reputable tier-one panels is smaller than the difference between a careful installation and a sloppy one.
Flashing that keeps water out for 25 years, correct attachment spacing for local wind and snow load, sound electrical work, and a company that will still exist when something needs attention. Those decide your outcome more than a two percent efficiency difference.
Sensible questions about equipment
- What is the panel's degradation rate and guaranteed output at year 25?
- Does the warranty cover labour, or only the replacement part?
- Is the manufacturer likely to still exist to honour a 25 year warranty?
- What inverter type, and why is it right for my level of shading?
- Is the racking rated for local snow and wind load, and is that on the engineering documents?
- Near the coast, is the hardware corrosion rated?
Questions people ask about this
Any reputable tier-one panel with a strong warranty and a low degradation rate will serve a New York home well. The more consequential decisions are the inverter type given your shading, and the quality of the installation itself.
Only when roof space is limited. If your roof comfortably fits the capacity you need, higher efficiency buys you little. On a small or cut-up roof it is what makes the system viable.
It expresses how much output drops as the panel gets hot. It matters less in New York than in hot southern states, but a better coefficient still helps on summer afternoons when panels can run far above air temperature.
Understand the specifications so you can evaluate what is proposed, but installers have supply relationships and warranty certifications that make some choices impractical. Judge the reasoning rather than dictating a brand.
All-black panels are generally monocrystalline and usually slightly more efficient than older blue polycrystalline. Much of the preference is aesthetic, and on many roofs that is a perfectly legitimate reason to choose them.
How to check any solar contractor
This is a new site with no customer reviews, so we are not going to show you any. What we can do is tell you exactly what to verify about whoever contacts you, and where to look it up. That applies to the installer we refer you to and to every other quote you get.
NABCEP certification
The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners is the industry standard credential for solar installers. It certifies the individual professional who holds it, not the company, so a firm advertising it may have one certified person and twenty who are not.
How to check. Ask which named individual holds it, then search that name in the directory.
Search the NABCEP directoryNYSERDA participation
Registration in the state's NY-Sun programme. This one is not a nice to have: the New York State incentive is only available through an approved contractor, so using an unregistered installer forfeits it. Some also hold the Quality Solar Installer designation, which requires at least 12 NY-Sun projects in the past year and an average of 4 out of 5 on NYSERDA's own field inspections.

Check NYSERDA's contractor listLicensing and insurance
Appropriate electrical licensing for the work, plus general liability and workers compensation cover. A contractor without workers compensation can leave you personally exposed if someone is injured on your roof.
How to check. Ask for certificates of insurance naming you, and check the licence with your town or county before work starts. Do not accept a policy number alone.
Local experience
Interconnection is where most New York solar timelines slip, and it is handled very differently by Con Edison, National Grid, NYSEG, RG&E and PSEG Long Island. Permitting varies again by town.
How to check. Ask how many systems they have energised on your specific utility in the past year, and for two addresses in your county you can drive past.
