How Do Solar Panels Actually Work?

No jargon, no diagrams of electron shells. Here is the actual chain from sunlight on your roof to the socket in your wall.

The short answer

A solar panel is made of silicon cells that release electrons when light hits them, producing direct current. An inverter converts that to the alternating current your home uses. The power flows to your appliances first, and any surplus goes to the grid, where net metering credits you for it.

The panel

A solar panel is a sheet of silicon cells under glass. Silicon is a semiconductor, which means that when light strikes it, some electrons are knocked loose. The cell is built so those loose electrons can only travel one way, and a one-way flow of electrons is an electric current.

That is genuinely the whole physical principle. There are no moving parts, nothing burns, nothing is consumed. It is the reason panels last decades with essentially no maintenance.

The inverter, which is the part that fails

Panels produce direct current. Your house runs on alternating current. The inverter does that conversion, and it is worth understanding because it is the component most likely to need replacing during the system's life.

There are three approaches. A string inverter is one box handling all panels, cheapest, but the whole string underperforms if one panel is shaded. Microinverters sit under each panel so each works independently, better with shade and better for monitoring. Optimisers sit under each panel and feed a central inverter, a middle path.

In New York, where mature tree cover is common, panel-level electronics are often worth the extra cost. On a completely unshaded roof they may not be.

Where the electricity goes

Your house takes what it needs first

Generated power flows to whatever is running right now. Nothing is stored or sent anywhere while you are using it.

Surplus goes to the grid

Your meter records the export. Under net metering, that becomes a credit at the full retail rate.

At night you draw back

Panels produce nothing after dark, so you pull from the grid and the credits you banked offset it.

A battery changes step two

With storage, surplus charges the battery before it goes to the grid, and the battery covers the evening instead.

Solar alone does not work in a power cut. A grid-tied system shuts down automatically when the grid goes down, to protect line workers. Keeping the lights on in an outage requires battery storage and the right switching hardware.

What affects how much you get

Orientation

South is best in New York. East and west still work and are very common.

Pitch

Affects both annual production and how readily snow slides off.

Shade

The biggest single factor. One badly placed tree can cut output substantially.

Temperature

Panels are slightly more efficient when cold. A bright February day is genuinely productive.

Season

Winter production drops because days are short, not because it is cold.

Dirt

Rain handles most of it in this climate. Pollen and leaf litter matter more than dust.

Questions people ask about this

Yes, at reduced output. They respond to light rather than direct sunshine, so an overcast day still produces, just less than a clear one. Annual production estimates already account for typical cloud cover in your area.

Panels produce nothing after dark. You draw from the grid, offset by credits earned from daytime exports under net metering, or from a battery if you have one.

Not on their own. A standard grid-tied system disconnects automatically when the grid fails, as a safety requirement to protect line workers. Battery storage with the right switching hardware is what provides backup.

A string inverter handles all panels together, so shading on one panel drags down the rest of the string. Microinverters sit under each panel and let each work independently. Microinverters cost more and handle shade much better, which matters on typical New York properties with mature trees.

Panels typically carry 25 year warranties and often outlast them. Inverters are electronics with a shorter service life and are commonly replaced once during the system's life, which is worth budgeting for.

How to check any solar contractor

This is a new site with no customer reviews, so we are not going to show you any. What we can do is tell you exactly what to verify about whoever contacts you, and where to look it up. That applies to the installer we refer you to and to every other quote you get.

NABCEP certification

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners is the industry standard credential for solar installers. It certifies the individual professional who holds it, not the company, so a firm advertising it may have one certified person and twenty who are not.

How to check. Ask which named individual holds it, then search that name in the directory.

NYSERDA participation

Registration in the state's NY-Sun programme. This one is not a nice to have: the New York State incentive is only available through an approved contractor, so using an unregistered installer forfeits it. Some also hold the Quality Solar Installer designation, which requires at least 12 NY-Sun projects in the past year and an average of 4 out of 5 on NYSERDA's own field inspections.

How to check. Search the company name in NYSERDA's list before you sign anything.

Licensing and insurance

Appropriate electrical licensing for the work, plus general liability and workers compensation cover. A contractor without workers compensation can leave you personally exposed if someone is injured on your roof.

How to check. Ask for certificates of insurance naming you, and check the licence with your town or county before work starts. Do not accept a policy number alone.

Local experience

Interconnection is where most New York solar timelines slip, and it is handled very differently by Con Edison, National Grid, NYSEG, RG&E and PSEG Long Island. Permitting varies again by town.

How to check. Ask how many systems they have energised on your specific utility in the past year, and for two addresses in your county you can drive past.
