Central New York gets more snow than almost anywhere else in the country. Syracuse averages somewhere around 120 inches a season, regularly tops national snowfall rankings among large cities, and this is the first thing people here raise about solar. It deserves a straight answer rather than reassurance.
Solar still works. Panels lose production in winter because days are short, not because it is cold, and they are actually slightly more efficient at low temperatures. Snow slides off tilted glass as the surface warms, usually within a day or two of a storm. Any production estimate worth reading already models winter losses for this climate, so the annual figure you are quoted should already account for it.
What snow does affect is design. Steeper tilt sheds better. Panels set flush to a low slope roof hold snow longer. Racking here must be engineered for genuine snow load, which is a structural question rather than a preference, and any competent local installer will treat it as one.
The economics are helped by housing costs. Homes in Syracuse, Utica and Rome are inexpensive relative to downstate, but electricity is not proportionally cheaper. That combination tends to make the array a larger share of home value and the savings a more noticeable share of household budget.
Ithaca is its own market, with unusually high solar awareness for a city its size and an established base of installers working around the hills and heavy tree cover.
Racking here must be specified for genuine Central New York snow load. Ask what load the design is rated to and confirm it appears on the engineering documents.
Steeper arrays clear themselves faster. On a low slope roof, discuss tilted racking rather than flush mounting, and weigh the extra cost against winter production.
It is the most common way people get hurt after going solar, and it risks cracking glass. Snow clears itself. Annual estimates already assume it.
Lake effect is intensely local. A figure for Syracuse may understate a site thirty miles north.

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners is the industry standard credential for solar installers. It certifies the individual professional who holds it, not the company, so a firm advertising it may have one certified person and twenty who are not.
How to check. Ask which named individual holds it, then search that name in the directory.
Search the NABCEP directoryRegistration in the state's NY-Sun programme. This one is not a nice to have: the New York State incentive is only available through an approved contractor, so using an unregistered installer forfeits it. Some also hold the Quality Solar Installer designation, which requires at least 12 NY-Sun projects in the past year and an average of 4 out of 5 on NYSERDA's own field inspections.
How to check. Search the company name in NYSERDA's list before you sign anything.
Check NYSERDA's contractor listAppropriate electrical licensing for the work, plus general liability and workers compensation cover. A contractor without workers compensation can leave you personally exposed if someone is injured on your roof.
How to check. Ask for certificates of insurance naming you, and check the licence with your town or county before work starts. Do not accept a policy number alone.
Interconnection is where most New York solar timelines slip, and it is handled very differently by Con Edison, National Grid, NYSEG, RG&E and PSEG Long Island. Permitting varies again by town.
How to check. Ask how many systems they have energised on your specific utility in the past year, and for two addresses in your county you can drive past.
