Older housing stock and a lot of slate is what makes the Capital Region different.
The Capital Region has some of the oldest continuously occupied housing in the state. Large parts of Albany, Troy and Schenectady were built between 1880 and 1940, which matters more for solar than most people expect. Slate roofs, steep pitches and knob-and-tube-era electrical services all change what an installation involves, and some of them change whether it is worth doing at all.
If your roof is slate, be careful who you let on it. Slate is walked differently from asphalt, it breaks under a careless boot, and matching replacement tiles on a hundred year old roof is not a trivial repair. Ask directly whether the crew has done slate before, and get the answer before they quote.
The newer suburbs are a different proposition entirely. Clifton Park, Halfmoon, Niskayuna and much of Guilderland went up from the 1960s onward with simple asphalt gable roofs and modern 200 amp services. Those are among the most straightforward residential installs in New York.
Snowfall runs around 60 inches a season, which is real but not extreme by upstate standards. It is enough that panel tilt matters for shedding, and not enough to change whether solar makes sense.
Troy, Saratoga Springs and parts of Albany have local historic district review. That does not mean no, but it can mean panels must not be visible from the street, which changes the design and sometimes the economics. Find out before you get attached to a plan.
A crew that only does asphalt should not be learning on your roof. Ask what they have done and how they flash penetrations on slate specifically.
Homes still on 100 amp service often need an upgrade before solar, and more so if an EV charger is coming too. It is a real cost and some quotes leave it out.

GE-era neighbourhoods with substantial detached homes. Many have had electrical services modernised already.
High property values and strong preservation rules downtown. Outlying areas are far more flexible.
Postwar and modern subdivisions. Simple roofs, modern panels, among the easiest installs in the region.
The largest suburb by population. Wide mix of ranch and colonial stock from the 1950s onward.
Suburban with larger lots toward the west, which opens up ground mount where roofs do not work.
Mid-century modern and split-level housing, generally good roof orientation.
Established suburbs with mature tree cover. Shading is the usual constraint here, not roof condition.
Village housing plus surrounding rural parcels where ground mount is often the better answer.

The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners is the industry standard credential for solar installers. It certifies the individual professional who holds it, not the company, so a firm advertising it may have one certified person and twenty who are not.
How to check. Ask which named individual holds it, then search that name in the directory.
Search the NABCEP directoryRegistration in the state's NY-Sun programme. This one is not a nice to have: the New York State incentive is only available through an approved contractor, so using an unregistered installer forfeits it. Some also hold the Quality Solar Installer designation, which requires at least 12 NY-Sun projects in the past year and an average of 4 out of 5 on NYSERDA's own field inspections.
How to check. Search the company name in NYSERDA's list before you sign anything.
Check NYSERDA's contractor listAppropriate electrical licensing for the work, plus general liability and workers compensation cover. A contractor without workers compensation can leave you personally exposed if someone is injured on your roof.
How to check. Ask for certificates of insurance naming you, and check the licence with your town or county before work starts. Do not accept a policy number alone.
Interconnection is where most New York solar timelines slip, and it is handled very differently by Con Edison, National Grid, NYSEG, RG&E and PSEG Long Island. Permitting varies again by town.
How to check. Ask how many systems they have energised on your specific utility in the past year, and for two addresses in your county you can drive past.

National Grid and NYSEG all operate in Capital Region. Which one you are on affects your electricity rate, your interconnection process and how long approval takes, so it changes payback. Confirm your utility before comparing a quote against a figure a neighbour quotes you.
Capital Region sees around 60 inches a season. It does not stop solar working. Panels produce less in winter because days are short rather than because it is cold, and they are slightly more efficient at low temperatures. Snow slides off tilted glass as it warms, usually within a day or two. Any credible annual production estimate already models winter losses for this climate. What snowfall does change is design: tilt and racking must be specified for local load.
