We are not an installer. We are an independent resource that helps New York property owners understand solar, and connects them with one local professional when they are ready.
NY Solar Finder is an independent solar education and referral service for New York, operated by RBR Growth Consulting. We do not sell, install or service equipment. We earn a referral fee when a visitor is connected with an installer, which is how the site stays free to use.
Why this exists
Researching solar is unpleasant in a way that researching most large purchases is not. Fill in a form on a typical solar site and your phone number goes to a lead pool, which means five or six companies call you over the following week. People learn to avoid the forms, which means they end up researching a twenty five year decision from marketing copy alone.
That is the gap. Almost everything written about solar online is written by someone trying to sell panels, and the parts a homeowner most needs, when it does not work, what to question in a quote, which incentives actually still exist, are exactly the parts a seller has no reason to write.
So the guides here are written to be useful whether or not you ever contact anyone. If they help you get a better quote from a company you found yourself, that is a good outcome.
How we make money, plainly
We earn a referral fee when a visitor is connected with our installation partner and goes ahead. That is the entire model. There is no charge to you, no payment is taken through this site, and nothing is marked up.
That arrangement creates an obvious incentive, so it is worth saying what we do about it. We do not publish company rankings, because ours would be shaped by commission like everyone else's. We tell people when solar does not suit their property. And we refer you to one installer rather than selling your details to several, which earns us less per lead and is the whole point of the site.
Who operates it
NY Solar Finder is owned and operated by RBR Growth Consulting. The site is not owned by, branded as, or operated on behalf of any solar installation company.
All content here is written by us. None of it is supplied, reviewed or approved by an installer, which is why we are able to write things a partner might prefer we did not.
What we will not do
- We do not publish fake reviews. This is a new site with no customer reviews, so we show none rather than inventing them.
- We do not display certification badges. NABCEP and NYSERDA credentials belong to installers, not to us. We name them and link to the issuing bodies so you can verify.
- We do not sell your details to a lead pool. One installer, one call.
- We do not publish incentive figures we have not verified. Every number carries a verification date, because the rules changed significantly in 2025 and a lot of sites have not caught up.
- We do not rank companies. We explain how to evaluate them instead.

How to check any solar contractor
This is a new site with no customer reviews, so we are not going to show you any. What we can do is tell you exactly what to verify about whoever contacts you, and where to look it up. That applies to the installer we refer you to and to every other quote you get.
NABCEP certification
The North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners is the industry standard credential for solar installers. It certifies the individual professional who holds it, not the company, so a firm advertising it may have one certified person and twenty who are not.
How to check. Ask which named individual holds it, then search that name in the directory.
Search the NABCEP directoryNYSERDA participation
Registration in the state's NY-Sun programme. This one is not a nice to have: the New York State incentive is only available through an approved contractor, so using an unregistered installer forfeits it. Some also hold the Quality Solar Installer designation, which requires at least 12 NY-Sun projects in the past year and an average of 4 out of 5 on NYSERDA's own field inspections.
How to check. Search the company name in NYSERDA's list before you sign anything.
Check NYSERDA's contractor listLicensing and insurance
Appropriate electrical licensing for the work, plus general liability and workers compensation cover. A contractor without workers compensation can leave you personally exposed if someone is injured on your roof.
How to check. Ask for certificates of insurance naming you, and check the licence with your town or county before work starts. Do not accept a policy number alone.
Local experience
Interconnection is where most New York solar timelines slip, and it is handled very differently by Con Edison, National Grid, NYSEG, RG&E and PSEG Long Island. Permitting varies again by town.
How to check. Ask how many systems they have energised on your specific utility in the past year, and for two addresses in your county you can drive past.
